Five tell-tale signs of over-edited or staged photos: (1) background is blurred or removed on one shot but not the other — suggests compositing rather than a single-take pair, (2) skin texture looks different between before and after (pores visible on before, airbrushed on after — most common edit), (3) earring/jewellery/hairstyle differs between shots (the photos are weeks apart, not a matched pair), (4) shadows fall in different directions (different lighting setups), (5) the after is in a higher resolution than the before (different source files). DEEPPLANE™ does not run these checks for you — apply the five signs yourself, and use the source link on each photo to see it in its original context. Authentic surgeon portfolios will also show in-progress shots at 3 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months rather than only the single most flattering result.
Why do some surgeons only show photos at angles that flatter the result?
Three legitimate reasons + one less-legitimate one. Legitimate: (1) the patient consented to a specific photo set and the surgeon respects the consent boundary; (2) certain angles emphasize the technique's strength (deep plane especially shines in the three-quarter and oblique views, where SMAS-only lifts often look flat); (3) standardized clinical-photo protocols call for matched front/oblique/profile/submental angles, but Instagram-friendly cropping shows only one. Less legitimate: cherry-picking — the surgeon has results across many angles but only posts the flattering ones. The diagnostic test: ask to see the FULL standardized series (front, both 45-degree obliques, both true profiles, submental looking up) at the consultation. A surgeon who refuses or only ever has 'frontal only' is hiding something. A surgeon who walks you through 5+ matched pairs across all angles is signaling confidence in the work across all viewing positions.
Should I trust before/after photos that don't show the patient's eyes?
Yes, with one specific caveat. Surgeons routinely crop or black-bar the eye region for patient-privacy reasons — this is a HIPAA / GDPR consent issue, not a deception flag. Most published surgical portfolios in journals and society publications do the same. The diagnostic value of a facelift photo is the lower two-thirds of the face (jawline, cheek vector, neck contour, nasolabial folds), all of which remain fully visible with the eyes covered. The caveat: a black bar that's positioned differently between before and after (covers the eyes on before but extends down to the cheek on after) can be hiding something specific. The honest version covers the same area in both shots. If you're seeing a series where the masking pattern shifts asymmetrically across pairs, ask the surgeon to walk you through their consent + redaction protocol — most have a written one and will send it on request.
