Signature technique

Dr. Rousso's signature technique is the advanced deep plane facelift surgery, a cornerstone of his facial rejuvenation practice. This sophisticated method involves addressing the deeper SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer, requiring specialized training in sub-SMAS dissection and precise manipulation of facial ligaments. His expertise in this technique allows for the comprehensive repositioning of descended facial tissues, aiming to achieve natural-looking results. Dr. Rousso emphasizes that the deep plane approach helps preserve natural facial expressions, effectively avoiding the operated appearance sometimes associated with more traditional facelift methods, making it a significant component of his surgical philosophy.

About

With more than 20 years in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Joseph Rousso is a New York facial plastic surgeon who is listed as board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) and who focuses on deep plane facelift surgery. As of July 2026, he practices in New York City, one of the most competitive facial surgery markets in the United States.

Dr. Rousso is associated with NYU Langone, a nationally recognized academic medical center. His clinical background spans both cosmetic rejuvenation and complex reconstructive work, a combination that shapes how he approaches the aging face.

He completed his medical education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, one of the more established medical schools in the country. This academic foundation informs a technique-driven approach to facial surgery.

Deep plane facelift surgery sits at the center of Dr. Rousso's cosmetic practice. This procedure repositions the deeper facial tissues rather than simply tightening the skin, which is why it appeals to patients seeking natural-looking, longer-lasting rejuvenation.

Beyond the facelift, Dr. Rousso also focuses on rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) and reconstructive surgery. This breadth means he works comfortably with both aesthetic goals and functional facial concerns.

His reconstructive experience is notable. Dr. Rousso has discussed cleft lip and cleft palate surgery through the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, reflecting a surgeon who operates on delicate facial anatomy across a wide age range.

That reconstructive precision often carries into cosmetic work. Surgeons who repair trauma, birth differences, and facial paralysis tend to bring meticulous tissue handling to elective procedures like the deep plane facelift.

Dr. Rousso holds membership in the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), a professional society for surgeons who concentrate specifically on the face. He is also affiliated with the New York Facial Plastic Surgery Society.

His practice serves a bilingual patient base, offering Spanish-language communication for consultations. This reflects the diverse, international character of New York City itself.

The deep plane technique that Dr. Rousso performs targets facial aging at its structural source. By releasing and lifting the SMAS layer (the sheet of muscle and connective tissue beneath the skin), the procedure restores contour to the cheeks, jawline, and neck.

Recovery from a deep plane facelift is a gradual process. Most patients move through an initial phase of swelling and bruising before results settle over several months, and Dr. Rousso's team guides patients through each stage.

Dr. Rousso's approach emphasizes facial harmony rather than an overly tightened appearance. The goal of deep plane surgery is a refreshed, rested look that ages naturally alongside the patient.

His New York location places him within reach of patients from across the region and beyond. The city's role as a global hub means it draws individuals seeking experienced facial plastic surgeons.

For women in their fifties and sixties considering facial rejuvenation, Dr. Rousso represents an established option in a demanding market. His two decades of practice, academic training, and dual cosmetic-reconstructive background form the core of his profile.

Patients researching deep plane facelift surgery in New York will find that Dr. Rousso combines specialized facial focus with the resources of a major academic medical institution.

The top of our son's ear was folded over at birth. My wife wanted to "correct" it, so we saw Dr. Rousso when our son was a few weeks old. Dr. Rousso was professional and had excellent bedside manner. He applied a plastic device to our son's ear that stayed in place for a few weeks. When it was removed, the ear perfectly matched the other ear. The whole process was smooth, quick, and well tolerated by our infant. Our son is now a toddler and his ear still looks great.

Dr. Joseph Rousso approaches the deep plane facelift as a structural procedure that addresses the deeper anatomy of the aging face rather than the skin alone. This philosophy distinguishes the deep plane technique from older, skin-only lifts.

At the heart of the operation is the SMAS layer — the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, a continuous sheet of muscle and fibrous tissue that lies beneath the skin and above the deeper facial structures. In a deep plane facelift, this layer is released and repositioned as a unit with the overlying skin.
