His professional background extends beyond private practice. According to his own published material, Dr. McHugh performed international aid work as a Surgeon Commander with the Royal Australian Navy, adding a dimension of surgical breadth to his career.

Dr. McHugh's stated specialties include the deep plane facelift, brow lifts, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), and rhinoplasty. This concentration on the upper and mid face reflects a surgeon whose interest centres on facial aging and its correction.

The deep plane facelift is a technique that repositions the deeper structural layers of the face rather than simply tightening skin. This distinction matters to patients who wish to avoid the pulled or overly tight appearance associated with older facelift methods.

Dr. McHugh's approach, as reflected in his practice materials, emphasises natural, aesthetic results. His writing notes that conventional facelifts can stretch skin tightly across the face, and that his complementary maxillofacial background informs a different structural philosophy.

Rhytidectomy is the medical term for facelift surgery, and within this category the deep plane variation works beneath the SMAS (the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, a layer of connective tissue and muscle in the face). Working at this level allows tissue to be lifted as a unit.

Dr. McHugh's qualifications, as listed on his website, include MBBS from Sydney, BDS from London, memberships with the Royal College of Surgeons, and fellowship credentials including FAACS. Prospective patients are encouraged to verify all credentials independently.

Facial rejuvenation is a considered decision, particularly for patients in their fifties and sixties who want to look refreshed rather than altered. Dr. McHugh's emphasis on natural outcomes speaks directly to this priority.

Recovery from a deep plane facelift is a gradual process, and Dr. McHugh's practice provides guidance on what patients can expect through the healing weeks and months. Understanding this timeline in advance helps patients plan their return to social and professional life.

Brisbane and the wider region of Australia represent a mature medical market with established standards of surgical care and regulation. Patients considering facial surgery in this part of the country benefit from a well-developed healthcare framework.

Dr. McHugh's practice offers a broad menu of procedures, from facial surgery to body and maxillofacial work, though his facial rejuvenation services remain central to his cosmetic identity. This breadth reflects his cross-disciplinary training.

Among his distinguishing features is the claim to be Australia's only surgeon qualified in both maxillofacial and cosmetic surgery — a positioning that, if verified, would set his anatomical grounding apart from peers focused on one discipline alone.

Dr. McHugh's dual foundation in medicine and dentistry gives him a working familiarity with the bony architecture that underlies the soft tissue of the face. For facial procedures such as the deep plane facelift, this structural literacy can inform surgical planning.

Patients researching Dr. John McHugh will find a surgeon whose career blends private cosmetic practice, maxillofacial expertise, and a stated commitment to natural facial rejuvenation. His profile on DeepPlane.com gathers this information for those weighing their options in Australia and beyond.

I recently had a tummy tuck with Dr. McHugh as I had lost a lot of weight and had excessive loose skin. From the first appointment he put me at ease with his calm manner and expertise. I couldn't be happier with the surgery, the ongoing support from him, his nurse and the whole team, and not to mention the results. I cannot thank Dr. McHugh enough for the wonderful job that he did. I would not hesitate recommending him to anyone.

In March 2023 I had an upper and lower blepharoplasty proceedure done by Dr John McHugh at his Penrith rooms. I highly recommend him and his staff. As well as being a remarkable surgeon Dr McHugh is a kind and easy to talk to man who cares about his clients and their best outcomes. I felt confident in his abilities and trusted him from the outset. I am almost 74 yrs of age and having the blepharoplasty has improved my clarity of vision and I look brighter and refreshed. I followed the post operative instructions and found that the initial bruising and swelling quickly reduced and within nine days I attended a large event in Sydney. Since then more improvement has occured almost to the point that the scars are hardly visible. I am very happy with my results and thank both Dr McHugh and his wonderful staff for their ongoing kindness, cheefulness and care. Because I felt so comfortable and trusting I decided to have breast implants removed that were twenty eight years old, in June 2024. I wasn't in any pain but the length of time and concern about how much longer they would be non problematic prompted me to book in for their removal and a breast lift. Dr McHugh had informed that the recent ultrasound he had me have showed ruptures and calcification so it was a timely decision and one that I have not regreted. The operation went well, it was around four and a half hours long. I was home the same day. The worst part of the operation for me was having the drains in for two days and having to be elevated in bed for those two to three nights. The drains were a little painful whenever I moved so I was relieved when they were removed. The removal was painful but once out I felt the full relief of knowing I was well on the way to healing. I only took panadol a couple of times during my whole recovery period. Now six months later I have no pain and the scars are healed well. The breast lift gave me back a lovely contour and are visually pleasing and the breasts are back where they belong rather than heading south . Once again Dr McHugh did a wonderful surgical job and the after care has been superb. Dr McHugh and his nurses Rebecca and Bree and Tara the practice manager are caring and fun and I always look forward to my follow up visits. I highly recomend Dr McHugh for any surgery you may be considering.

Dr. McHugh's Surgical Approach

Dr. John McHugh approaches the deep plane facelift as a structural procedure that repositions the deeper tissues of the face rather than relying on skin tension alone.

Dr. John McHugh approaches the deep plane facelift as a structural procedure that repositions the deeper tissues of the face rather than relying on skin tension alone. His published practice material explicitly contrasts this with conventional facelifts, which he describes as stretching skin tightly and risking a pinched appearance.

The deep plane technique operates beneath the SMAS — the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, a continuous layer of muscle and connective tissue that sits between the skin and the deeper facial structures. By releasing and lifting this layer as a unit, the surgeon can restore youthful position to the cheek and jawline.

Recovery from a deep plane facelift typically unfolds over several months, with the most visible healing concentrated in the first few weeks. Understanding this timeline helps patients plan their return to social and professional life.

During the first one to two weeks, swelling and bruising are at their most pronounced. Because the deep plane technique works beneath the SMAS, some patients experience firmness and tightness as the repositioned tissue settles. Rest, head elevation, and following the surgeon's instructions are essential in this early phase.
