Dr. Antunes's Surgical Approach

The deep plane facelift technique employed by MD Marcelo Antunes involves precise dissection beneath the SMAS layer to reposition facial tissues in their natural anatomical planes. This surgical approach differs fundamentally from traditional facelift methods by addressing the deeper structural elements that contribute to facial aging, including the descent of the malar fat pad and jowl formation.

During the procedure, the surgeon creates access through carefully placed incisions that follow natural skin creases, allowing for manipulation of the sub-SMAS plane while preserving important facial nerve branches.

The technique requires releasing specific retaining ligaments that tether facial tissues, enabling comprehensive repositioning of the midface, lower face, and neck as a unified structure. By working in the deeper surgical plane, the procedure achieves several advantages: reduced tension on skin closures, preservation of natural facial movement, and longer-lasting results compared to superficial techniques. The SMAS layer itself serves as a critical anatomical landmark, with the deep plane dissection proceeding beneath this fibromuscular sheet to access the spaces where age-related volume shifts occur.

Recovery from deep plane facelift surgery follows a predictable timeline, with the first two weeks representing the most intensive healing phase when swelling and bruising reach their peak before beginning to subside. During days 1-7, patients typically experience facial tightness and require prescription pain management, with drainage tubes often removed within 24-48 hours and initial sutures addressed at the one-week mark.

During days 1-7, patients typically experience facial tightness and require prescription pain management, with drainage tubes often removed within 24-48 hours and initial sutures addressed at the one-week mark. The second week sees significant improvement in swelling, though residual puffiness particularly in the midface region may persist, and most patients feel comfortable with camouflage makeup by day 10-14.

Social recovery, defined as the point when patients feel presentable in public settings, generally occurs around week 3-4, though individual healing rates vary based on factors including age, skin quality, and adherence to post-operative protocols. The deep plane technique's advantage lies in reduced tension on skin closures, often resulting in less prolonged swelling compared to traditional methods, though the initial inflammatory response may be more pronounced. By week 6-8, approximately 80% of swelling has resolved, revealing the emerging facial contours, with continued subtle refinements occurring over the subsequent months.

I’m not really sure how to leave a review for something so important and personal as a face lift and Dr Antunes. I’ll keep it simple. This is the only office and the only doctor I would ever trust with my face. Dr Antunes is conservative, thoughtful, and effective. The office is responsive and available at every turn. The nurses are first class. I interviewed all over the country over two years prior to surgery and ended up with a doctor 2 miles from my house. The best decision.

f you are looking for a surgeon who handles complex revisions rhinoplasty, I highly recommend looking elsewhere. My experience with Face Austin left me incredibly disappointed, especially given their double board-certified reputation. From the very first phone call, the environment felt entirely transactional and money-driven. The medical coordinator Jennifer gave what felt like a high-pressure "casting" sales pitch to justify their $350 consultation fee. I was explicitly told they receive 400 calls but only select a small handful of patients deemed "worthy" of the doctor's time. It also became immediately clear that they prioritize high-ticket surgical bundles over individual patient needs. I was essentially told that smaller, standalone procedures (anything under the $10K mark) wouldn't be entertained unless I wrapped them up with a major surgery, like a deep plane facelift(which in my late 20s is absolutely ridiculous to suggest without in person consultation). They seem to prefer simple, high-profit surgeries over actually listening to what the patient wants. Most concerning was the coordinator's lack of foundational knowledge. When I described my specific case—a very standard older technique—she claimed she had never even heard of it. Instead of having me sitting down and meet with the doctor in person for assessment, she admitted she didn't know if the doctor would even take my case. no surprise after telling me she "would check" with the doctor, they completely ghosted me. That tells you everything you need to know. If you have a complex revision, or if you simply want a practice that values patient care and in-depth knowledge over "easy," bundled, high-profit surgeries, save your time and your consultation fee. Seek out a doctor who prioritizes your happiness and actually wants to help, rather than a practice that filters patients purely based on how much they are willing to spend.

This is my second review of Emily! I most recently had a Halo facial (also included my neck and hands) and it produced AMAZING results. Emily is sooo thorough and detail oriented. She told me what the procedure would entail and she gave me pre and post care instructions. I cannot emphasize enough how comprehensive she was. The recovery is a process but she checked in with me the next day and looked at my recovery photos. Great bedside manner!! She developed a specific plan for my needs and the results are stunning. And my hands seriously look 10 years younger. And it’s only been two weeks! On top of that she is friendly and engaging and even funny when it’s called for. You will not be disappointed in your results!! The rest of the office staff was delightful as well. Approachable and friendly!
