Three weeks ago I had a mummy makeover with Dr Kotti, and I wanted to share my honest experience because the emotional journey after surgery is something people don’t talk about enough. Day 1 (Surgery Day): I was a mix of emotions.. excited, a little nervous but also calm, I knew I had prepared well. When I woke up I felt an incredible sense of relief that everything had gone well, and surprisingly I wasn’t in pain. Day 2: Reality starts to set in. You realise how difficult it is to move and how limited your mobility is, but I still felt positive and focused on recovery. The nurses were amazing at the hospital and gave lots of helpful tips. Day 3: Leaving the hospital made me realise how much help and support I would need at home. It’s a big adjustment relying on others for everyday things. Day 4: This was the most emotional day for me. Doubt creeps in and you start questioning why you did this. The anaesthesia, medication and exhaustion definitely play a role in how emotional you feel. Day 5: I started to feel better. I saw Dr Kotti for a dressing change and, as always, he was extremely positive, reassuring and encouraging. I had a little cry! And he reminded me (as he had in the consultation’s) that these emotional ups and downs are completely normal and that everything was progressing exactly as expected. Day 7: My drains were removed and I started lymphatic drainage massages. This made a huge difference both physically and mentally. From this point I really felt my recovery improving. Erna the massage therapist has been a great emotional support too. Days 7–14: Every day I could stand a little straighter and felt my mobility return. I saw Dr Kotti regularly and the nurses and massage therapist were brilliant. The level of care and follow-up has been excellent. My emotions really settled and I started to feel like myself again!
