A deep plane facelift is usually described as settled at 12 months, but we found no study that measures a one-year result, scar maturation or the end of swelling, so the timings on this page are typical ranges from surgeons' practice, not measurements. The photographs below are real published patients photographed at twelve months, and they show how those patients looked, not how you will. The 1-year mark is the retrospective milestone: surgeons usually describe the result as stable since month 6 and the scars as mature, and the two remaining waiting periods, filler and ablative resurfacing over the scar zone, end here. Scar tissue is described as remodelling over 12 to 18 months, so by the 1-year mark incision lines are usually flat and white or skin-toned in the natural creases around the ear; we found no study that times this, so these are typical ranges. Silicone gel, wound down from month 6, is typically finished by month 9-12. One habit does not end: daily sun protection over the scar zone continues indefinitely, because sun exposure can still hyperpigment a healed scar.

A scar that is still raised or firm at 12 months despite consistent silicone and steroid treatment is not usually expected to resolve on its own: it is one of the recognised revision triggers below, and scar excision with re-closure becomes an option from month 12. Residual deep swelling is described as settling within the first six months. At 12 months, therefore, the usual answer to 'is this still swelling?' is no, though we found no study that times it. Firmness, fullness, or puffiness that persists at, or newly appears at, the 1-year mark is not a stage of healing to wait out; it is worth a visit to your surgeon to identify the cause. • Daily sun protection. Sun exposure is a commonly cited aging factor; surgeons usually advise protecting the scar zone and the face year-round.

Month 12 onward is the usual window in which revision surgery, if warranted, is planned and performed; the concern itself should have been documented photographically at the 6-month follow-up, and re-operation waits until scar tissue has softened. A revision conversation at 12 months is legitimate when the concern is structural:

• Tartósan látható aszimmetria: a visible difference between sides at matched landmarks, shown on photographs. We hold no study that sets a size at which revision is warranted, so your surgeon judges it.

We hold no study of how often a revision is needed after a deep plane facelift, so ask your surgeon for their own figure. Two things a revision conversation is not for at this point: dissatisfaction with aging that has continued since surgery (that is maintenance territory), and concerns never raised at the 6-month follow-up that are invisible on comparison photos.
