What FACS means & how to verify it
Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) is a USA fellowship; a surgeon described as a fellow of FACS has met that body's requirements at the time of listing. About FACS: what it means for a facelift patient
FACS — Fellow of the American College of Surgeons — indicates that a surgeon's education, training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have been evaluated and found consistent with the standards of the American College of Surgeons.
The American College of Surgeons, founded in 1913, is a scientific and educational association of surgeons spanning all surgical specialties. Fellowship is applied for after training: candidates must generally hold the appropriate specialty board certification, have an established practice, and pass the College's peer evaluation of their practice and ethics.
The FACS letters are therefore a cross-specialty marker of professional standing — a facelift surgeon with FACS may hold their primary certification in plastic surgery or in otolaryngology. For the specialty signal, read FACS together with the board certifications shown on the surgeon's profile.
How to verify a surgeon's FACS status
- Confirm fellowship through the American College of Surgeons at facs.org.
- Check the surgeon's primary specialty board certification separately — FACS complements it, it does not replace it.
