About ABPS: what it means for a facelift patient

The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the specialty board that certifies plastic surgeons in the United States, and one of the member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Founded in 1937, the ABPS examines and certifies surgeons in plastic surgery of the entire body. Candidates must graduate from an accredited medical school, complete an accredited plastic surgery residency, and pass the board's written and oral examinations before they can call themselves ABPS diplomates.

ABPS certification is maintained through the board's continuing-certification requirements rather than held as a one-time lifetime title.
